About the event

The Optics Workshop will  explore a variety of topics about the science of light, behavior and color, the anatomy of the eye, and wave optics.

This is a paid class (All funds will go toward maintaining our organization and continuing to provide classes), however we will make exceptions for low-income families and families who are unable to pay this cost and would still like to attend. Please email us at theartstem@gmail.com and we will give you a discount code to attend the class for free.

Class 1: Introduction To Optics

Class 2: Lenses and Application

Class 3: Light and Human Anatomy

Class 4: Wave Optics

Class 1:

The first class of the workshop will cover an introduction of Optics and Light theory. The students will explore the fundamentals of light, such as color and wavelength, then look at more complex topics such as the laws of refraction and reflection. To correlate with the natural world we will investigate the ideas of rainbows and prisms and their relationship to light. The artwork will further establish concepts as they will create a visual representation of the topics they learn.

Class 2:

The second class of the workshop will cover the Application of Optics and Concave and Convex Lenses. The students will explore the idea of telescopes and magnifying glasses by correlating the positions of lenses to create the desired effects. This class will also investigate the applications of lenses and the impact they have made in their respective fields. The artwork will further establish concepts by illustrating the power of a lens.

Class 3:

The third class of the workshop will cover the anatomy of the eye and some surprising implications it may have. By looking into the structure and functioning of the eye, this workshop will explore vision corrections and color blindness. It will also delve into the transduction of lightwaves into neural impulses, in short how the brain understands the light waves we see. The students will also look into the idea of light years and astronomy.  The artwork will reinforce the ideas of color and black and white, an excellent example of the relationship between the eye and light waves.

Class 4:

The fourth class of the workshop will cover Wave optics and the fundamentals of principles and laws relating to Optics. This workshop will explore ideas such as inference, changes in intensity and properties, and the effect of water and glass on light. It will also introduce Huygen's principle and polarization. To conclude this workshop we will look at the functionings of cameras, relating them to everything we have learned. We will create our very own paper polaroid pictures revisiting the various main points of this workshop.
